چکیده

The spike-triggered average voltage (STV) is an experimentally measurable quantity that is determined by both the membrane response properties and the statistics of the synaptic drive. Here, the form of the STV is modelled for neurons with three distinct types of subthreshold dynamics; passive decay, h-current sag, and damped oscillations. Analytical expressions for the STV are first obtained in the low-noise limit, identifying how the subthreshold dynamics of the cell affect its form. A second result is then derived that captures the power-law behaviour of the STV near the spike threshold. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Frequency dependence of CA3 spike phase response arising from h-current properties

The phase of firing of hippocampal neurons during theta oscillations encodes spatial information. Moreover, the spike phase response to synaptic inputs in individual cells depends on the expression of the hyperpolarization-activated mixed cation current (I h ), which differs between CA3 and CA1 pyramidal neurons. Here, we compared the phase response of these two cell types, as well as their int...

Spike and burst coding in thalamocortical relay cells

Mammalian thalamocortical relay (TCR) neurons switch their firing activity between a tonic spiking and a bursting regime. In a combined experimental and computational study, we investigated the features in the input signal that single spikes and bursts in the output spike train represent and how this code is influenced by the membrane voltage state of the neuron. Identical frozen Gaussian noise...

Impact of Fast Sodium Channel Inactivation on Spike Threshold Dynamics and Synaptic Integration

Neurons spike when their membrane potential exceeds a threshold value. In central neurons, the spike threshold is not constant but depends on the stimulation. Thus, input-output properties of neurons depend both on the effect of presynaptic spikes on the membrane potential and on the dynamics of the spike threshold. Among the possible mechanisms that may modulate the threshold, one strong candi...

Got a moment or two? Neural models and linear dimensionality reduction

Il Memming Park, Evan Archer, Nicholas Priebe, and Jonathan Pillow A popular approach for investigating the neural code is via dimensionality reduction (DR): identifying a low-dimensional subspace of stimuli that modulate a neuron’s response. The two most popular DR methods for spike train response involve first and second moments of the spike-triggered stimulus distribution: the spike-triggere...

Parameter extraction and classification of three cortical neuron types reveals two distinct adaptation mechanisms.

Cortical information processing originates from the exchange of action potentials between many cell types. To capture the essence of these interactions, it is of critical importance to build mathematical models that reflect the characteristic features of spike generation in individual neurons. We propose a framework to automatically extract such features from current-clamp experiments, in parti...
